Stoke has fired manager Gary Rowett after eight months in charge.
The Potters were among the favorites for the promotion of the Sky Bet Championship this season, but they have not been enough and they are currently in the 14th position in the table, eight points out of the play-off places.
A statement from Stoke said: "The club wishes to thank Gary and his staff for their efforts over the past eight months.
"A new management appointment will be made as quickly as possible."
Rowett signed a three-year contract with Stoke in the summer after the relegated Premier League team paid Derby 1.8 million pounds in compensation for his signing.
However, they have not won in their last four games and were left with a 1-1 draw at home by League One Shrewsbury in the FA Cup on Saturday.
Rowett began his management career at Burton in 2012 and guided them to the League One play-offs on two occasions before joining Birmingham.
He was expelled controversially in December 2016 despite being on track to take the Blues to the playoffs, before moving to Derby.
Stoke's attention will now be focused on finding a permanent replacement for Rowett, with reports suggesting the Potters have been considering David Moyes and Sam Allardyce.
However, sources have told Sky Sports News that England's former manager, Allardyce, is not a candidate for the post at bet365 Stadium.
