Willian and David Luiz have been friends since childhood and teammates at Chelsea since 2013, and they’re hoping that the latter arrangement continues well beyond this season, even as they’re both past 30 now and thus subject to Chelsea one-year-contracts-only policy.

“For sure, of course. I want. We have to see if the club will want him. I think they want. For me, I want him to stay. David has a lot of quality to do this kind of passes [like for Kanté’s winning goal against Crystal Palace].”
In fact, Willian is putting his friend’s needs above his own.

“I’m fine. No rush about [my own contract]. We can talk about that in the future, no problem.”

Unfortunately for Willian, the hang-up with David Luiz’s contract appears to be the defender’s own reluctance to agree to just the one-year extension. Even though Chelsea are highly unlikely to bend the rule that was not bent even for John Terry or Frank Lampard, David Luiz, at least for now, is holding out for a longer contract.

Maybe Willian can convince him to sign if he truly wants his friend to stay beyond this season. (Assuming Willian himself stays at Chelsea of course, which is far from assured especially if, as expected, Christian Pulisic arrives in the summer.)
