Serie A news, Juventus vs Sampdoria: Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo finished second behind Ballon D'Or reject Lionel Messi on 2018 goalscoring charts
With just two minutes into the game, Ronaldo found the back of the net. He cut in from the left, made space before curling the ball through the defense which dipped late before going past goalkeeper Emil Audero. With the goal, Ronaldo overhauled Rui Barros to become the most prolific Portuguese goalscorer in a single Serie A season.
However, 33 minutes later, the visitors pulled off the equalizer after the referee adjudged midfielder Emre Can for a handball inside the box, after referring to the VAR. Quagliarella slotted the ball straight and high, sending Juve debutant Mattia Perin the wrong way, as he became the first player since former French footballer David Trezeguet in 2005 to score in nine back-to-back Serie A matches.
Sampdoria started off strong in the second half of the game before referee awarded Juventus a penalty following the handball from Gian Marco Ferrari in the 65th minute. The referee took time to decide after checking through the VAR before announcing the penalty. Ronaldo stepped up and made no mistake to keep the hosts ahead in the game. The goal was Ronaldo's 14th in Serie A as he stands as the top-scorer, while for Juventus, it was the club's 100th goal of 2018.
Late in the injury time, Riccardo Saponara had scored a stunner from outside the box, but VAR ruled out his effort as Juventus finished off 2018 with a 2-1 win at home.
For Ronaldo, he finished with 49 goals in 2018 off which six were scored for his country. The ex-Real Madrid man finished second behind Messi in the year's goal-scoring chart with the Argentine being the only player to reach the 50-goal mark this year. He scored 51 goals in 2018 off which four came for his country Portugal. The duo is followed by 46 goals from Robert Lewandowski.
