Barcelona skipper scored his first hat-trick of the ongoing La Liga season and provided with two assists as the Catalans scripted a ravishing and a dominating 5-0 win over Levante to integrate their position at the top in the league. And with the hat-trick, Lionel Messi completed his 50 goals for the year 2018 becoming the first player to reach the target for this year.
Messi did another of his magical spell to net the 31st La Liga hat-trick of his career for Barcelona before helping Luis Suarez and Gerard Pique feature on the scoresheet. The win helped Barcelona to acquire a three-point lead at the top of La Liga.
And for Messi, the treble implied 50 goals in 2018 for club or country. He became the first player to reach the milestone, ahead of second-placed Cristiano Ronaldo and Robert Lewandowski, who both have 46 goals to their name and a few games at their hand to reach the mark before the end of 2018. The Argentine has scored 50-plus goals for club and country in eight of the last nine years, 2013 being the only exception (45 goals).
Messi, who finished fifth in the race to the prestigious Ballon d'Or trophy, now has 14 league goals, which is more than any other player in Europe's top five divisions this season. Also, he has the most league assists provided in Europe's top five divisions this season - 10. And together, it makes him the first player to score 10+ goals and provide 10+ assists in any of Europe's top five leagues this season.
"Suarez and Messi are the best striking partnership in the world. Luis has goals in his veins -- and everything has already been said about Leo," defender Pique said after the Levante match as he paid his respect to the Latin American footballing duo.
